The Benefits Of Young Children Using Knives (Safely)

Allowing children to use safe knives is more than just a fun activity. It’s an opportunity for them to develop skills and explore their senses. By encouraging their involvement in food preparation, we’re creating enriching sensory experiences that will benefit them for years to come.

As an early intervention provider, I’ve seen the impact that simple activities can have on a child’s development. One activity that often surprises people is allowing children to use safe knives to cut play dough and, eventually, real food like fruits and vegetables. Beyond the obvious fine motor benefits, this practice offers a rich sensory experience and fosters independence.

My Experience: A Personal Touch

I remember watching my own children enthusiastically chop vegetables with a now discontinued Pampered Chef My First Cutter. It was a simple tool, but it sparked a sense of accomplishment.

In my classroom days, we used disposable plastic knives to cut strawberries while reading “Pete the Cat.” It’s a small moment, but it’s one that engages multiple senses and creates lasting memories.

These experiences solidified my belief: allowing young children to use safe knives under supervision is beneficial for their development in numerous ways.

The Evidence: Backed by the Professionals

It’s not just me. Research supports the idea that involving children in food preparation has significant advantages. A study found that encouraging children to participate in cutting fruits and vegetables increases the likelihood of them trying and enjoying those foods.

Occupational therapists also recognize the value of this activity. Theraplay4Kids offers excellent strategies for teaching children how to use safe knives, emphasizing gradual progression and safety.

  • “Start off with chopping or cutting up soft foods that are “made just right for cutting,” and then move to firmer foods.  For example, start with bananas, jello squares, or cooked spaghetti noodles, before attempting a pancake.
  • Practice cutting and spreading skills during other non-meal time activities such as when they are playing with play-dough, slime time, or during craft activities.
  • You can start with a plastic knife, but it will not have the same weight, handling, or cutting action of a regular knife. If you are concerned about safety, you may want to try a spreading knife, or a butter knife to begin with.”

Even mainstream media acknowledges the benefits. This NPR article highlights the Montessori approach in which gradual, safe progression is key

“As part of the practical skills curriculum at Montessori schools, children as young as 18 months old are given a butter or jam knife for spreading condiments. Then they move on to chopping soft fruits like bananas. Eventually the child graduates to a serrated knife. (Super sharp chef knives are not part of the program.)”

Of course, safety remains paramount.

Connecting the Dots

Allowing children to play with safe knives and cut real food gives them practice with hand-eye coordination needed to use a real knife when they are ready. This activity naturally promotes fine motor skills, but it also encourages them to explore new textures and tastes. By involving children in food preparation, we’re not just teaching them how to use a knife, we’re cultivating a positive relationship with food.
